TANU WEDS MANU MOVIE REVIEW

'Tanu Weds Manu' despite a very predictable premise, gets off to a promising start but post interval the film drags, testing the viewer's patience. It looks like Anand L Rai wanted to make a romantic comedy but the bungled treatment leaves the audience clueless and renders the entire exercise futile.

'Tanu Weds Manu' is a simple plot about a NRI groom who is looking for a quintessential Indian bride. Convinced by his parents to go in for an arranged marriage Manu Sharma (R Madhavan) arrives in Kanpur to meet the girl and the family. Manu falls head over heels in love with Tanu (Kangana Ranaut) on their very first meeting. There's a minor hiccup - the feisty small-town girl has done her own 'setting' and is absolutely not interested in marrying the very eligible Manu.

The director creates a colorful canvas - whether it's Manu visiting the to-be-brides, Jassi's (Eijaz Khan) traditional Punjabi wedding or the hilarious journey to Vaishno Devi. The film has some interesting characters - Manu's best friend Pappi (Deepak Dobriyal) and Tanu's best friend Payal (Swara Bhaskar), both of whom give memorable performances. The nature of the lead characters is also interesting- Tanu is a rebel without a cause and Manu is the good boy hopelessly in love.

While the first half works mostly because of the humour quotient, the second half suffers on account of heightened melodrama. The narrative inches painfully forward to a most predictable climax totally mishandling the mishmash of subplots.

Considering there are hardly any interesting upcoming releases, you might just want to catch this one for Madhavan and the first half.
